• 5 million Americans have heart failure
• 550,000 newly diagnosed cases every year
• Ten people per 1,000 over age 65 have heart failure
• The five year mortality is 50%

Consider the impact as well of other heart diseases:
Stroke

• Stroke is the 3rd leading cause of death
• Someone has a stroke every 53 seconds, and there is a death every 3.3 minutes
• There are 600,000 strokes per year
• Stroke is the leading cause of long term disability

Coronary Heart Disease (MI, angina)

• There is a coronary event every 29 seconds, death every minute
• There are 1 million MIs/year
• 650,000 new
• 450,000 recurrent
• 40% of people will die

Hypertension

• 50 million Americans have Hypertension
• 32% don't know they have it
• 27.4% are on medications and controlled
• 26.2% are on medications, not controlled
• 14.8% are not on medications
